Bio/personality: Alex was raised in the village of Montblanc, in Saniel. At a young age, demonstrating a degree of aptitude for personal combat, as well as academic pursuits, he was enrolled in the Ryukendo School of Combat. Though the school was named as such, it was still primarily an academic facility, one of the best in Saniel, and it also offered courses specializing in combat and magic, to train its students to defend themselves from the Great Enemy.

As Alex progressed through his teenage years, he developed a strong sense of justice, believing that only through unity of purpose could mankind stand strong enough to survive the darkness the Great Enemy forever threatened it with. He was especially devout in attending church services, though did not consider the priestly life to be suitable for him. Later, he began to read some of the ancient philosophical works of High Paladin Allerka, and found the works especially invigorating, particularly those passages which spoke of the inherent divinity of man.

Alex graduated school with decent grades, but particularly shined in the annual combat tournament that most senior students entered before graduation. He readily defeated all of his opponents, including Conrad, his best friend. The final match was between himself and Mileena, his other lifelong friend, and subject of a seemingly eternal crush. Despite Alex’s skills, however, Mileena was better, and won the tournament, with Alex finishing second.

Shortly after graduation, Mileena departed Montblanc, seeking fame and glory in the mercenary life, though Alex elected to remain in Montblanc for the time being, and began working in the town guard. However, ten months later, Montblanc was suddenly attacked by a monster force numbering in the hundreds.

Though Alex and Conrad fought in the defense of the town, their relative inexperience fighting against actual monsters left them unable to make a significant contribution to the battle. The monsters were eventually defeated, though nearly a fourth of the town had been burned to the ground.

Alex and Conrad, disheartened and somewhat disgusted with their inability to help defeat the monsters, concluded that their best means of helping protect Montblanc would be to leave and gain some actual real-world experience. In addition, they could likely acquire a significant amount of gold with which to hire mercenaries to aid in the defense, as well as better equipment for themselves. Plus Alex hoped he would run into Mileena again, he hadn’t heard from her in months.

Waiting another month to ensure Montblanc was no longer under threat, the two applied for membership in the Mercenaries Guild, and began their journey eastward.

In-game role: Alex is the party leader, and, as such, is the only character you can’t switch out. In terms of function, he’s an all-rounder character, having decent melee, magic, and healing power, but not necessarily excelling in any of them. At the start of the game, he’ll be your only actual healer until you pick up Marie, so you’ll probably be relying on him quite a bit to help keep the party up. Don’t be shy on having him heal, you’ll need the damage output from the others to make sure those monsters go down.
